Compare Appliance Energy Use Before Replacing
Use model-specific energy information, installation costs, and your needs when comparing replacement appliances.
Originally published · Updated
An appliance’s operating cost is one part of a purchase decision. Compare products that meet the same need before drawing conclusions about savings.
Read the label
The FTC explains the EnergyGuide label. It provides energy-use information and a comparison with similar appliances. The cost shown is an estimate, not a promise about your household’s bill.
Compare suitable models
Check capacity, dimensions, functions, and installation requirements. Your usage and local energy prices affect operating costs. Avoid assuming a new appliance will produce a fixed percentage saving or pay for itself by a particular date.
Include the cost to get it home
Add delivery, installation, accessories, removal, and any payment-agreement costs to your comparison. Keep repair and continued use of a safe existing appliance among the options. Our appliance guide helps you compare the full replacement cost.
